About Athens Sports

(Athens, Greece)

In terms of sporting achievements, Athens has much to take pride in. As part of its sporting legacy it is well-known as being the birthplace of the original athletic contests that have become known as the Olympic Games, while the city was also the founder of marathon running.

The sport with the most support in Greece is football and the nation's team winning the Euro 2004 tournament has only served to increase Greek interest in the game.

Sports you may like to try while in Athens include golf, tennis, scuba diving, swimming, sailing and windsurfing. The Athens Marathon takes place every year in November and utilises the original historical route. Horse racing at 'The Faliro Ippodromo' racetrack can be seen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
